The viewing room anatomized as pure horizontal geometry with Hal supine on its floor: the viewer "dead and gray-green," the drive's controls like "stunted tongues," the spectation furniture reduced to planes. The apparatus the whole book's watching happens through, catalogued here switched off, as the room in which Hal — who can no longer be watched accurately by anyone, himself included — practices being "one horizontal object in a room filled with horizontality."
