U.H.I.D.'s mission statement, from the laminated card Joelle shows the courteous gentleman on the Davis platform: a fellowship defined by fear of being seen. Carlisle builds his Ch. 17 commentary on the polarity this word opens — "scopophobic" U.H.I.D. against the scopophiliac film culture of the surrounding sections — the veil and the lens as the same seeing-economy's two poles.
