Joelle's last walk to Notkin's party — "people looking at her like you…"
people looking at her like you look at the blind, naked gazes, not knowing she could see everything at all times. She likes the wet walk for this, everything milky and halated through her veil’s damp linen, the brick sidewalks of Charles St. unchipped and impersonally crowded, her legs on autopilot, she a perceptual engine
Context
The veil as one-way lens: pedestrians gaze nakedly at what they assume can't see back, while she perceives "everything at all times" through wet linen that renders the world "milky and halated" — JOI's own halation vocabulary (032's "most angelic of distortions"; n.76) applied by his star to her own eyesight. "She a perceptual engine" is the theme's job description.
