he knows a couple of the E.M. Security officers from when his father got them to portray Boston police in his whimsical Dial C for Concupiscence
Context
The faintest of these sightings, and quietly touching for it. Mario, on one of his insomniac walks around the Enfield Marine grounds, knows the security guards personally — because his dead father once cast them as extras, Boston cops in one of his films. The father is gone, but the son still moves through a neighborhood the father populated with his cinema; the guards are props from a Himself production, now just people Mario nods to at night. The paternal presence here is entirely residual — the world JOI filmed still staffed by the people he filmed, the son walking through the set.
