The full-spectrum lighting system had been a labor of love from Himself to the Moms, who’d agreed to leave Brandeis and head up the Academy’s academics and had an ethnic Canadian’s horror of fluorescent light; but by the time the system had been installed and de-bugged, the gestalt of the Moms’s lumiphobia had extended to all overhead lighting, and she never used her office’s spot-and-plate system.
Context
Himself engineers the Academy's ingenious full-spectrum lighting specifically so Avril won't have to endure the fluorescents she can't stand — a labor of love, the accommodation of a phobia built into the physical plant. And by the time it's debugged the phobia has outrun it: her lumiphobia has generalized to all overhead light, so she uses none of it. This is the Avril enclosure-complex in one motion — a dread the whole institution reorganizes itself to soothe, which then expands past every accommodation offered it, so that the love-gift sits unused while the fear keeps spreading. The system rearranges itself around her aversions faster than the aversions can be met.
