the Fully Functional Phil ad meeting — "He’s a goof, an iconic child…"
He’s a goof, an iconic child, but he’s active. He stands for the attraction of capacity, agency, choice.
Context
The countermeasure to the Entertainment is itself an entertainment, and its content is agency sold as a mascot. Fully Functional Phil — a cross-eyed prancing burro with buck-teeth product tie-ins, a Native-American-cum-Breakdance "Warning Dance," and an adolescent music-video edition whose catchphrase is "It's your ass, ace" — "stands for the attraction of capacity, agency, choice," the "energy and verve versus passivity" packaged as a floppy-eared toy. The apparatus that has trained the entire population into "sofas and eyes" now markets choice and activity back to their children, disseminated through the same passive-viewing pipeline (the Mr. Bouncety-Bounce slot, response-group-tested to the second). Agency becomes just another product moved by the machinery of passivity; the cure and the disease share a distribution grid and a business model, and no one in the room can hear the contradiction.
