Erdedy waits for the pot to arrive (pp. 26–27)
for a while he killed time casually by trying to imagine what entertaining scenes on the unwatched viewer the changing colors and intensities might signify.
Context
A small, eerie beat: unable to watch the screen, Erdedy watches its glow bleed around a doorway and tries to imagine the entertainment he cannot see. Spectation has become so reflexive that even a blank, unwatched viewer pulls the mind into audience-posture, guessing at scenes from shifts of colored light. It pairs with the passage's closing image of "desires and ideas being watched but not acted upon" — a self that has slid fully into spectator of its own impulses, which is the passivity the whole theme circles.
