Day's complaint about AA hands the theme a clean statement of its central condition: the "glazed passive spectatorial state of mind" that a doctrine, an institution, a culture works to inspire in the newcomer. He experiences the meeting as a machine for producing passive spectators — people who "walk around glazed with our arms right out straight in front of us parroting," who are told to "Simply open wide for the spoon" and swallow whole. Whether or not his critique of AA is fair (the scene frames him as a man rationalizing his way back toward relapse), his phrase names the era's manufactured default: passivity as a spectatorial posture something is always trying to cultivate in you. The "open wide for the spoon" spoon-feeding rhymes exactly with the ad-copy the theme tracks elsewhere — the culture, the program, the Entertainment all coaching the same glazed receptivity, the arms-out zombie-stance of the trained watcher.
