The Medusa v. the Odalisque is Cage III's petrifying twin: instead of swelling into eyeballs, the on-screen crowd turns to stone, killed by the act of watching two "visually lethal" beauties. The film is "silent w/ audience-noises appropriated from network broadcast television" — the soundtrack is literally a canned TV audience, so the petrification is scored to the sound of spectation itself. Where Cage III shows watching that devours the watcher into pure reception, M-v-O shows watching that kills outright, the beautiful spectacle turning its audience to blind stone. Together they are the anti-Entertainment's thesis panel, the films Joelle audited (150) and Hal aborted (132): art built to make spectation visibly fatal, a dress rehearsal, decades early, for the cartridge that would do it for real.
