it has fallen to him, Lucien, to direct their attention without delay to an entertainment item they have come here to acquire. And require, this Copy-Capable item.
Context
The whole atrocity is for an entertainment. The A.F.R. have murdered Bertraund with a railroad spike and encircled Lucien not for territory or vengeance or any political demand, but to "acquire. And require" a single "Copy-Capable item" — the Master of the Entertainment, and specifically the master because only the master can spawn the copies that will do the killing. The mundane commercial verb ("acquire," "item") against the ceremonial slaughter is the point: the samizdat has organized this entire death-machine around itself, bent an insurgent cell into torturers whose sole object is to lay hands on a cartridge. The Entertainment's gravitational pull, glimpsed abstractly at 077 (Steeply's cover) and 098 (the copies as inventory), here becomes literal butchery — everything the A.F.R. is has been aimed at getting the Master that can be copied and disseminated, the weapon whose ammunition is pleasure.
