Context
Kenkle and Brandt, the night janitors, encountered on Hal's way down through the building — the institutional answer to the p. 867 line: the adults who work E.T.A.'s halls at night have had to plug their ears against the students' nightmares as a standing condition of employment. The nightmare-economy made infrastructural. (The plan cited p. 873; the raw's marker puts the sentence just past the p. 874 turn.)
