Gately, the wraith, and the figurants (pp. 840–841)
The intensifying rose-colors behind Gately’s closed lids are from the hospital room lightening as the light outside the window gets licoricey and pre-dawn. Gately lies below the unoccupied heart-monitor snoring so hard the railings on either side of his bed shiver and rattle.
Context
The narration steps outside the dreamer mid-scene: the monitor the wraith sat on is suddenly "unoccupied," and the man hosting the novel's central dialogue is shown from the room's POV — just a huge guy snoring at dawn. The rose behind his lids answers p. 830's "same dark rose shade you see when you close your eyes": the dream's sky was always eyelid-colored.
