Joelle's walk and U.H.I.D. (pp. 225–226)
he’d had occasion to see one or two of these linen veils before, around, like what she wore, and was interested and rendered curious. He pronounced all four syllables of interested, which Joelle, from Kentucky, enjoyed. If he might be so bold, he said, tipping his hat. Joelle had engaged with him completely, which was extremely rare, even off the air.
Context
The Davis Square platform, the morning of her planned death: a courteous older gentleman asks about the veil with tipped hat and four-syllable interest — the polar opposite of the street's indelicacy and Boylston's naked gazes — and it opens her completely. The veil turns out to be a workable social interface when someone treats it as an institution rather than a wound; his question is what produces the membership card and the founding legend.
