Context
The veil in public, upscale-Boston version, on the walk to what Joelle intends as her death: gazes go naked because the gazed-at is presumed not to see — and the presumption is exactly wrong. The veil converts the scopophobe into "a perceptual engine," one-way sight as the fellowship's practical payoff; the U.H.I.D. doctrine scenes (060, 104) formalize what this walk enacts.
