Struck plagiarizes the A.F.R. train-cult essay (p. 1058)
‘It is, for example, largely conceded that Les Assassins’ confinement to their epithetic wheelchairs can be traced to rural southwestern pre-Experialist Quebec’s infamous “Le Jeu du Prochain Train,” and that the A.F.R.’s Root Cult itself was comprised largely or perhaps even entirely of veteran devotees and practitioners of this savage, nihilistic, and mettle testing jeu pour-meme.
Context
The theme's genealogical keystone: the wheelchairs aren't misfortune, they're provenance. The A.F.R.'s "confinement" traces to a game whose whole point was to court it — leglessness as the mark of having waited longest at the crossing, election rather than affliction. Everything Marathe's stumps and Fortier's prosthetics paragraph mean flows from this sentence; the note hangs, precisely, off Marathe remembering his "four-limbed childhood, before Le Culte du Prochain Train" (p. 732).
