Gately's dreams and Mrs. Waite's death (p. 848)

quote

Mrs. Waite herself had swollen veiny ankles and little white bits of that dried paste at the corners of her mouth and about a million newspapers stacked and mildewing all over the kitchen, and the old lady basically radiated whatever mixture of unpleasantness and vulnerability it was that made you want to be cruel to people.

Context

Between the two dreams, the real body the dreams are built on: the shunned neighbor whose aging flesh "radiated" exactly what draws cruelty — the mechanism the whole theme keeps circling, named from inside the one kid who wasn't cruel but couldn't love her either.
