Gately and Joelle talk veil and U.H.I.D. (p. 538)
‘Don, I’m perfect. I’m so beautiful I drive anybody with a nervous system out of their fucking mind. Once they’ve seen me they can’t think of anything else and don’t want to look at anything else and stop carrying out normal responsibilities and believe that if they can only have me right there with them at all times everything will be all right. Everything. Like I’m the solution to their deep slavering need to be jowl to cheek with perfection.’ […] ‘I am so beautiful I am deformed.’ […] ‘I am deformed with beauty.’
Context
Pressed for a straight answer about what's behind the veil, Joelle gives the other one — and Gately hears only sarcasm. The speech doubles as a literal description of the Entertainment's effect on viewers, from its star; and the acid-scarred-or-lethally-perfect question stays deliberately double, per our standing ruling (Carlisle rules pro-acid at 159 — both verdicts cited there). Beauty as deformity is the theme's limit case: a "hideous and improbable" body with nothing hideous about it.
