The A.F.R. theme winking from the set-dressing: mid-flight, the obstacle is a wheelchair advertisement — "queerly placed," the text says, without saying by whom — and the refuge Tony is sprinting toward is the Antitoi shop, occupied by actual wheelchaired killers who acquire test Subjects. Carlisle adds that Joelle passed this same display a week earlier on her own last walk (p. 224): the cardboard wheelchair as a fixed marker both doomed pedestrians clear without reading.
