This was after the girl Orin had been wildly in love with and Himself had compulsively used in films had been disfigured. Orin kept a record of Subjects that was sort of a cross between a chart and a journal. He used to come home and leave it out just pleading to be read.
Context
Hal at supper, recalling Orin's college-era Subject-chart: the disfigured girl is Joelle, unnamed — a passing table-side datum that corroborates the disfigurement account of her veiling, which Notkin's acid story (159) and Joelle's own "Not exactly veiled" (178) then complicate. Note the loaded compression: love, Himself's compulsive filming, and the disfigurement stacked in one sentence, with the serial Subject-taking dated from the wound.
