Context
Gately places her voice — "You're Madame on the FM, is how I knew you" — and gets nothing back from the gauze. Recognition in this relationship runs entirely on sound, the one channel the veil doesn't cover; the Gately-Joelle thread that carries the veil question through the whole last quarter (161, 166, 179) starts on exactly this asymmetry.
