Gately's evening staffer duties (p. 593)
Gately has to go up and check on Kate G., who claimed to be too sick to hit AA again tonight and has been in bed in her room more or less steadily for three days, reading somebody called Sylvia Plate.
Context
The funniest-bleakest warning sign in the House: Kate horizontal for three days straight with the most legible suicide-flag in Western print culture, which Gately's unlettered eye registers as "somebody called Sylvia Plate." (Carlisle catches the continuity wrinkle — she was up and getting hugged at the NA meeting two nights earlier, so "more or less steadily" is doing real work.)
