Though to Mario he always maintains it’s basically goo, Hal secretly likes it, too, the cartridge, and likes to project himself imaginatively into the ex-bureaucrat’s character on the leisurely drive home toward ontological erasure.
Context
Hal runs the little didactic film twice, and the identification he permits himself is precise and terrible: not the Jesus question, not the rescue — the drive home, leisurely, toward ontological erasure. A son whose father drove his own route to self-erasure, rehearsing the trip imaginatively, and liking it.
