Cocaine converts Lenz's talking-as-thinking into pure, unstoppable broadcast: a compulsion to keep any warm body in earshot and pour the entire "case of R. Lenz" into it. "Green or any compliant ear" — the listener is now fully interchangeable, wanted only for the impossibility of his leaving. The scene's footnoted diagnosis names it precisely: a garrulousness so total it produces a complete inability to send from his presence anyone at all willing to listen.
