Context
The scene ends with both channels opening at once, phone and buzzer, contact finally arriving from two directions, and it paralyzes him utterly: flung between the two summonses, arms out, entombed, empty-headed. At the moment the world's signals reach him he can answer neither, and the last image of the addict is a man suspended between two calls, connected to no one.
