unable to read even his own face
tried to make out my face's expression in the east window. It was now too light, though, outside, off all the snow. I looked sketchy and faint to myself, tentative and ghostly against all that blazing white.
Context
Told his face is broadcasting something he can't feel, Hal goes to the window to check for himself — and can't. The glare of the snow washes out the glass, so the one instrument he has for reading his own signal fails him, and what he does glimpse is a self already fading: sketchy, faint, ghostly against the white. He can neither feel what his face shows nor see it; the interior and the exterior have decoupled so completely that Hal has become unreadable even to Hal. [sweep · shared-ground ghosts-wraiths]
