the figurant made flesh: a man with no words for what he sees · S2

quote

Lucien Antitoi is one of the very few natives of Notre Rai Pays ever who cannot understand French, just never caught on

Context

Lucien is the theme's figurant carried to its limit and given a whole heart: a Québécois who never caught the language everyone around him speaks, who keeps the shop's mirrors and converses gently with a broom he carved as a boy, wordless not by choice but by constitution. The novel treats his speechlessness not as a lack but as a different kind of access — beauty comes to those with "no native words for what they see" — so that the man who cannot say anything is also the one who most purely sees.
