The opening ends by promising the one thing the interview refused: a listener. It will not be a Dean or an M.D. but a blue-collar orderly, someone unlicensed, who finally looks Hal in the eye and asks him to narrate himself. The line is a demand for the very transmission the scene has just shown to be impossible, held out as the thing the novel now goes looking for.
