openness performed at a listener who only ever answers "Q."

quote

You have this way of getting stuff out of me.

Context

The cage of self worn as candor: Orin pours himself out to Steeply — the boundaries down, the bond felt, the total openness — and the reader can see the whole apparatus, because her side of the "conversation" is rendered only as "Q." and blank ellipses. He is performing intimacy into a silence that is in fact a disguised interrogator, mistaking a professional's cigarette-and-patience for a soul-baring bond, so that his most naked self-disclosure is both a seduction routine he can't switch off and a monologue delivered to a void that is extracting him. The closed loop of Orin's charm, caught in the act of thinking it has finally connected.
