a confession poured into a man who can't answer — "Gately couldn't connect the impulse to…"
Gately couldn't connect the impulse to speak with actual speech, still. He settled for trying to reach his left hand across and pat Ewell's hand on the railing. But his own breadth was too far to reach across.
Context
Tiny Ewell chooses Gately's bedside to unbury his deepest shame — a whole third-grade embezzlement, an unspeakable Fifth Step — and delivers it to a confessor who cannot respond, cannot even signal whether he's awake, so the confession pours into a void. When Ewell finally whispers that he's scared, Gately, aching to say hang in there, can neither connect the impulse to any sound nor even reach his left hand across to pat the man's hand — his own breadth too far to reach across. The comfort exists, fully felt, and dies against his own width. [sweep · shared-ground addiction-recovery]
