The book's paternal thesis-sentence: the wraith's youngest, most gifted son went silent before his eyes — visibly opening his mouth to speak and producing nothing — and no horror anywhere could match watching it. Worse, the rest of the family couldn't even register the disappearance; they looked at the boy and did not see him vanishing, listened to the father's alarm and did not hear it. It is the theme stated at its most desolate: a person going mute inside a family that cannot perceive the muteness, the failure to connect nested inside a failure to see the failure.
