Marathe's private rage names a precise violation: being talked for, his responses anticipated and supplied by another who then attributes them to him, so that the channel is commandeered and the self never gets to speak. He traces it to his brothers, who silenced him by "arguing every side and inserting his words," and suspects Steeply of doing it now as an interview technique — the fraternal ventriloquism that erases a person by pre-empting his voice, contact's opposite: not failing to hear someone but overwriting them.
