a love with not one word in it

quote

the only really cardiac-grade romantic relationship of Orin’s life took bilateral root at a distance, during games, without one exchanged personal phoneme, a love communicated—across grassy expanses, against stadiums’ monovocal roar—entirely through stylized repetitive motions

Context

The great romance of Orin's life is conducted across a stadium with "not one exchanged personal phoneme," a love "communicated entirely through stylized repetitive motions" — his punting, her twirling — two people devoted to each other in total verbal silence, at distance, through parallel performances aimed past each other at a crowd. And the tell of how real it is comes as the failure of his usual apparatus: "It never even occurred to him to ask her what sort of demeanor she preferred," the seduction-pose that governs every other Subject simply dropping away. The one connection that lands is the one he never speaks or strategizes — communication as two wordless dances, and a script finally abandoned.
