Under all of Day's demolition of the Program sits the thing the Program is quietly delivering: a person to bring your thoughts to. Day, who can dismantle every doctrine, cannot dismantle his own need to be heard — "to whom else might I speak?" — and Gately, who loses every argument, names the treatment without knowing he's naming it: talking, at the start, is the thing he himself most needed. The scene lets the intellectual war run and shows the actual medicine passing underneath it, which is simply that one man keeps talking and the other keeps being someone to talk to.
