Context
An impostor's rehearsed intake line, which is exactly why it tells us so cleanly what the real supplicants say: that you present at the door as addicted, deformed, and desperate, and that the desperation is the qualifying credential. Marathe has reduced the whole self-abasing ritual of asking to be taken in to one recited sentence, and the sentence is not wrong.
