visited by the Sergeant at Arms
Gately doesn’t even need his Staffer’s eerie seventh sense to sense that Lenz is clearly wired on either ’drines or Bing. That Lenz has been visited by the Sergeant at Arms.
Context
The relapse read instantly off the body — the wobbling eyeball, the writhing mouth, the supercharged aura — and named in the Program's own figure: Lenz has "been visited by the Sergeant at Arms," the disease personified as an officer who comes for you. The Staffer's expertise is the recovering addict's expertise; Gately doesn't need his seventh sense because he knows the tell in his own flesh, and the euphemism carries the doctrine that the disease is a separate agent, always waiting, that pays a call.
