MK-Ultra: the non-volunteer atrocity

Marathe's counter-jab that supplies the theme's darker historical register: pleasure-research and its opposite share the same expendable bodies. Against Steeply's story of eager Canadian volunteers, Marathe invokes MK-Ultra — the C.I.A.'s real program of experimentation on the non-consenting, the "Persons of Expendability" — insisting the pleasure-cage and the torture-lab are wings of one enterprise that treats human nervous systems as disposable test-beds. The seam matters to the theme because it strips the volunteers' "free choice" of its innocence: the same institutions that would sell you the lever also built their neuroscience on people who never got to choose. Engineered pleasure and engineered suffering run on the same expended flesh.
