Hal moves his mouth around to try to gather up spit in a mouth that’s gotten rather dry, which when you have a plug of Kodiak in is not very pleasant.
Context
The body's low chemical hum tracked through the scene as Hal leans repeatedly to spit into a NASA glass — dry-mouthed from four or five small hits and a plug of Kodiak, the spitting getting harder as the mouth dries, until he can't gather enough to spit at all. The compulsive apparatus (the tobacco, the dope, the spitting-ritual) running under the surface of a boy just sitting and watching.
