even anonymous kindness is a buzz that can be abused
if you do something nice for somebody in secret, anonymously, without letting the person you did it for know it was you or anybody else know what it was you did or in any way or form trying to get credit for it, it’s almost its own form of intoxicating buzz.
Context
The cage's mechanism traced even into virtue: secret, credit-free kindness delivers its own intoxicating buzz — and so, the litany notes without missing a beat, generosity too can be abused. The insight is unsettling precisely because it's hopeful and corrosive at once: the addict's wiring doesn't disappear in sobriety, it just finds cleaner things to compulsively chase.
