Context

The truth sets you free eventually, but there's an interval first — the truth working you over, being "done with you" — and everything the flashback is about to show (the beating, the forced high, Fackelmann's sewn eyes) is that interval made literal, the cost of the freedom Gately is white-knuckling toward in the bed.
