willingness as the unit of progress
I've sat outside that hospital room saying the Serenity Prayer over and over and praying for willingness and thinking of my own spiritual interests and believing this amend is my Higher Power's will for my own growth and I haven't been able to go in.
Context
The program's true unit of progress isn't the act but the willingness to act, and here it's shown at its breaking point: the amend must be made to a man the A.D.A. still, in the same breath, believes evil and wants removed from the community — the recovery doesn't require him to stop hating Gately first, only to walk in and extend the hand anyway. He can't, yet; he sits outside the room for hours on the Serenity Prayer and drives home unable. And the whole thing lands on that final "Yet" — the insistence that unwillingness is a stage, not a verdict, the smallest possible increment of surrender held up as the thing that matters.
