Context
The counselor on the phone, refusing a plea with the back of her wrist stopping a sob — and the refusal is the whole clinical doctrine in one call: promises are worth nothing against the disease, and saying yes to the promise would not be kindness but enabling, feeding the thing it pretends to relieve. The warmth she'll turn on Marathe a moment later is real and is built on exactly this hardness underneath.
