Context
Bleeding out in the street, Gately keeps working the job: he reminds Lenz he still owes the spot-urine that would prove the relapse, and he refuses the ambulance because he's Supervised-release and a gunshot at the House means jail. The recovery institution's duties and the recovering man's precarity both persist straight through the wound — the Staffer's clipboard and the ex-con's terror of the system outlasting the bullet — and the refusal of medical help to protect his fragile freedom prefigures the harder refusal coming, when the help offered will be the drug itself.
