Context
The institution's machinery for the thing it most fears: a resident's sideways comment about hurting herself triggers a whole protocol — call Pat, call the House Manager, relay the verbatim words, weigh them against the Suicide Contract, Log it all — because a woman once hung herself from a basement heating pipe here. Recovery is shown as bureaucratized survival, the House metabolizing the constant proximity of death into forms and red Rolodex cards and baroque monitoring, doing on paper what it cannot do in a resident's head.
