The recovery doctrine AA conveniently omits at intake, and the theme's correction to the Gratitude-and-Release sales pitch. The unspoken truth is that sobriety does not relieve pain, it routes you through it — the anesthetic gone, you finally feel what you were using to not feel, and the getting-better is identical with the hurting. The one consolation offered is directional: "at least this sober pain now has a purpose," it "means you’re going somewhere," unlike the "gerbil-wheel of addictive pain" that went nowhere. The theme's realism is total here: recovery is not the end of suffering but the exchange of pointless suffering for suffering that leads somewhere.
