Context
Gately's ninety-two-day cold-turkey withdrawal in a Revere holding cell recalled as the source of the same teaching from the opposite end: unable to face even sixty more seconds of the sickness, he survived by shrinking time down to the space between two heartbeats, building a wall around each second and living inside it. The program's gift and the addict's worst detox are the identical discipline — the endless Now — reached once through agony, and the question is whether it can be chosen straight, by will, all the time.
