This is material that was added after the early draft: absent from the 1993 manuscript, present in the published novel.

Further notes. Guilfoile's Infinite Summer complaint about this set piece unknowingly targets late-added material (see infinite-summer-guest-essays note). Later-stratum witness: the scene's text was still being touched at the very last stage — the galley's comic weight 320 kg became print's "75 kg" (diff-galley-bricklayer-weight, the DFW Words galley-versus-first-printing collation), so this post-1993 addition was revised again in the ARC→print window.
