Spiders & webs
The Incandenza family's spider phobia is expanded into a figure for the Disease and for the entertainment grid that spreads it. The book opens with "spidered light," and the fear is quickly given a bloodline: Himself's black widows "and their chaotic webs," partially inherited by Orin, with Latrodectus Mactans Productions naming the very spider JOI's father feared. The garage monologue is "saturated in spiders/webs," and the image becomes explicitly about addiction when Gene M. calls the will "the web your Disease sits and spins in" and urges "Starve The Spider." At scale the web becomes infrastructure — InterLace read as "the Spider's web" of addiction — and the phobia finally closes its loop when Fackelmann is imagined "telling his hand's claw's spider it was witnessing the birth of an empire," a private terror passed forward into the recovery house's Spider. The web is both the trap you're caught in and the thing you must refuse to feed.
