An all-caps caption does the orienting for you: what follows presents itself as a document — "SELECTED SNIPPETS" from Don Gately's informal chats with residents while he mans the Ennet House front-office phones, same Wednesday 11 November, running to about 11:29 p.m. (so this is the House end of the evening Lenz and Green are out walking through, pp. 553–562). It's dialogue only — no attributions, no stage directions; the space-breaks mark a change of resident, and you sort the voices by diction. Gately's is always the plain one ("Okey-doke").

After you read: three things

1. The long snippet is those two voices again. Joelle and Gately held this same office at 4:50 that morning (pp. 531–538); by evening they have running jokes — his accent ("Harrd. Harrrrrd."), her nerve in critiquing anyone's dress "under there," the Log. Then the floor drops one exchange: "Is your own personal Daddy still alive?" — "I dunno." Her family gets a full accounting; his gets two words (p. 563).

2. A logic puzzle as a Staff-level hazard. Day and Nell Gunther are working the living room asking newcomers whether God could make a suitcase too heavy for Him to lift, and the new kid Tingley is in the linen closet "going like He Can but He Can't but He Can" (p. 564). Watch Gately's reaction: in this House, being clever at somebody is treated as a genuine danger — "torturing the new people" — not a game.

3. Decode Yolanda's sponsor along with Gately. A "real friendly and fly" resident has been converting her morning Ask For Help into something else entirely — and also telling her to stay on his south side and buy a digital watch (p. 565). You watched those exact fixations from the inside on pp. 542–543. Gately needs one beat to get to "Holy Christ this is Lenz." Notice how much you know that he still doesn't.
