Endnote 290 — Ambiguous scars in a film

The film never makes explicit whether a girl's facial burn-scars come from a freebase accident. Bernadette Longley hopes they do, because otherwise the scars would read as symbols of a deeper spiritual wound, and equating facial with moral deformity strikes everyone over thirteen as "terribly gooey and heavy and stock."
