Endnote 235 — Photographs on the dresser

A woman has laid out photographs from her purse on the dresser of her own accord, without being asked. The man reads the gesture as a "synchronous mercy," (p. 1044) a small cosmic kindness offsetting bleaker images around it — the dead bird in the jacuzzi and the invasive reporter.
